No filter applied- this is just what taking a pic of a disposable camera with a disposable camera in poor lighting looks like. Cool and vintage, right?!

Unplugged Adventure: The Name Game

Nicole's amazing selfie powers...without a screen!

This weekend, the Winskye Family set out to have an Unplugged Adventure: no phones, no tech, no digital cameras.  The challenge was to find ways to spell the names of 15 Hawaii friends in photographs, without using the actual names. Our daring adventurers hunted high and low through the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet and China Town, braving heat and rain, determined to complete their quest. Over the next few days, I will be sharing the harrowing documentation of this journey.

The Quick Update

I will have a longer, better post on how Winskye life is going tomorrow, but for now, here is the quick version.

Lani:
Reading- Stardust by Neil Gaiman (novel, though graphic novel is on my list). Just finished rereading- first three novels in the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Fabulous Series. Read it. Next on the list- World War Z by Max Brooks.

Activities- crocheting, pinning on Pinterest, watching my cat sit in boxes in ever-cuter positions, wishing I were at the beach. Little bit of work here and there. Anyone hiring for odd jobs or theatrical contract work for the next 2 months? Dial me up!

Not in a box, but isn't she cute?

Joe:
Reading- Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey (one of MY favorite series ever).
Playing- The latest installment in the BioShock franchise. Beautiful game, fun story.
Other- work. working. lots of time spent working.

More on our other exploits soon...

Being Healthy

Rachael has issued a health challenge for the summer. Each participant had to declare an amount of weight to lose or a size of clothing that they wanted to fit into. My goal is 10lbs or my size 6 skinny jeans. Because I am not a size 6 anything, skinny or not, which was not the case before we moved here. We have ten weeks (from June 1) to accomplish our goal. Losers buy dinner for winners.

I've been using a pedometer app on my phone, Striiv, which has been great, because it is also a game and you earn new things in game by exercising. It auto-syncs with my calorie counter app, My Fitness Pal. Anyone using either of those who wants to become friends in-app, let me know! The calorie counter is easy to use because it has a barcode scanner. I can scan foods in my fridge and then just input the servings that I ate. It's making me so aware of how much I eat, that I've done this:

If you eat out of a measuring cup, you know exactly how much you've had!
Also, my calves and abs are killing me. Joe says it's because those muscles are remembering they exist. I say it's because exercise is evil.

My Life in Hawaii: A Retrospective, Part I

I have a lot of free time this summer; it's given me time to look back through old photos and think about the ups and downs I've experienced since moving to this lovely, godforsaken, sunny, rainy, lovely, disorganized island. I don't know where we will be this time next year, but it is likely to be someplace much colder than this, so I'm enjoying the weather while I can. A lot can change in two years. Here's what's happened to the Winskyes:

From July 2011...

Saying goodbye to family and friends...

Bidding farewell to my childhood home

...To July 2012

Teaching summer classes in Ewa Beach

Exploring history at Honolulu Hale (city hall)
Independence Day with our Canadian friends?

From August 2011...
Moving across the country to discover sushi served on conveyor belts!

Living on the floor out of boxes with my brother

married 2 years!
Being fiercely in love

...To August 2012
Dealing with an unfortunate knee injury
Enjoying Hawaii's beautiful beaches
Still ridiculously in love- our 3rd wedding anniversary

From September 2011...

Getting a house in Kaneohe with Shawn and Kris!

Starting Grad school at UH Manoa

Having quality sibling time and enjoying the view

...To September 2012

Running around town on a scavenger hunt with Murray!
5:30am sucks
Getting up way too early to exercise with Ray
Still very much in love (see how we can share a desk?)

Lots of good stuff and lots of good friends. Mahalo to our Hawaii ohana for being there for us during all this change. So far, it's been a memorable experience! To be continued...
